Transformer oil: it is a fractionation product of petroleum. Its main components are alkanes, naphthenic saturated hydrocarbons, aromatic unsaturated hydrocarbons and other compounds.

Main functions of transformer oil:

(1) insulation: transformer oil has much higher insulation strength than air. Dielectric material immerses in oil, can raise dielectric strength not only, and still can avoid moisture erosion.

(2) heat dissipation: transformer oil has a large specific heat and is commonly used as a coolant. The heat generated during the operation of the transformer makes the oil close to the iron core and winding expand and rise by heat. Through the up-down convection of the oil, the heat is dispersed through the radiator to ensure the normal operation of the transformer.

(3) arc elimination: on the on-load voltage regulating switch of oil circuit breaker and transformer, arc will be generated when the contact is switched. Due to the good thermal conductivity of transformer oil, and under the action of high temperature arc can contact a large number of gas, a large pressure, so as to improve the medium arc extinguishing performance, so that the arc is quickly extinguished.

The performance of transformer oil is usually required as follows:

(1) the transformer oil density should be as small as possible to facilitate the precipitation of moisture and impurities in the oil.

(2) viscosity should be moderate, too much will affect convection heat dissipation, too little will reduce the flash point.

(3) high flash point should be as far as possible, generally should not be lower than 136 ℃.

(4) the freezing point should be as low as possible.

(5) the lower the content of impurities such as acid, alkali, sulfur and ash, the better, so as to avoid their corrosion of insulating materials, conductors and fuel tanks.

(6) the degree of oxidation should not be too high. The degree of oxidation is usually expressed in terms of the acid value, which refers to the amount of potassium hydroxide (mg) needed to absorb the free acid in 1 gram of oil.

(7) the stability should not be too low. The stability is usually indicated by the precipitation of acid value test, which represents the anti-aging ability of oil
